He wasn't the first to learn to play an upside down guitar. Albert King for one did the same thing. Imagine what it took for any of them to just pick up a guitar as kid and learn to play. If they had anyone to show them them any fundemetals the first thing they would have heard is "let's restring the guitar." A guitar player, admitedly a weak one, it would have been impossible to watch a coventional player and learn anything. The most amazing thing is in Dicks 70's he can still shred a guitar.

when he was a kid, lefty guitars were almost impossible to get, so, like Jimi Hendrix, he just turned the guitar upside down and learned to play. He just didn't reverse the strings the way Hendrix did. Clapton's current guitarist does the same thing Dale does. And you'll notice it IS a lefty guitar, just strung backwards.
