I apologize for my poor word choice. I made the incorrect assumption that when he spoke of direction, he implied that because the object is moving "downward", the sign must be negative.

A is a vector, expressed in an oriented space. Saying a is negative is inaccurate. It can be anything. And yes the direction of the vector matters in the result, just as much as the orientation chosen.

Uh acceleration is a vector so yeah direction does matter if you want the sign you give (positive or negative) to have any meaning.
I think you lack the knowledge to talk about those things. What you call "making up negative" is actually considering your vector in the vertical downward direction.
Unless you are splitting the hair and mean direction as oppsed to direction+orientation. But that would be being totally idiotic. Plus if it was the case you wouldn't say direction doesn't matter.

Also wrong, direction does not matter. If we are using gravity as an example, I can make "up" negative or I can make "down" negative. It won't make a difference so long as I am consistent.

It's only fun if you can avoid staying OUT of the target zone ?? I think you meant the contrary.
eustazio (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
wrong : you didn't specify the direction.
without precision, the 'acceleration' can be anything between -abs(a) and +abs(a).

acceleration is negative
