Marlon Brando, one of the greatest actors of the last half century, and some say THE greatest, portrayed Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now. In the film, he is a highly decorated officer who went mad, killed many, and shacked up in Cambodia, miles from where the action was in Vietnam. Martin Sheen plays Capt.Willard who is sent to kill him. Sheen's trip up river to find him occupies most of the film. Brando is only in it for the last 45 mins or so. This is his final monologue in the film, describing "The Horror". Simply brilliant acting. His expressions are as sharp as can be. Allegedly, he was told he could improvise the description of the story he tells Willard of what he had seen at the camp they had to go for innoculation of children, so, thats pretty wild for him to make up what he did as he went along. Truly a great actor of our time.

IDK which scene moves me more, this one or the 1 where Rutger Hauer is about to die in Blade Runner. Either way, truly great acting.

It was his choice to join an illegitimate war. Any war on another man's land without just cause is illegitimate, therefor all the horrors they face are justified. Just because evil tells you this is right, doesn't mean it is.

Like I said, it all comes down to choices. It was Kurtz choice to go into another man's land with automatic weapons and bombs. Wake up, the people that send our brothers and sisters into war want something else.

Yes I agree, this is an incredible monologue. People have knocked Brando for overacting in this film but he really nailed this scen. It truly is like watching a man trying to describe his insanity

Don't go painting people as good or evil based on their actions when forced into an essentially evil situation. There is no devil, and there may very well be no god in the christian sense. Any morals we have are created by ourselves and our upbringing and are totally capable of evapourating when placed into dire enough circumstances. Brando's character (Walter Kurtz) was originally a humanitarian and the perfect officer. He was pulled into insanity by the horrors of war not by the devil you TWAT

Atramental what the Hell are you talking about? You obviously do not understand what this movie was trying to say. Then again what should i expect from a god fearing zealot. Don't give me any of that crap about the devil giving you what you want you evangelical piece of pond scum. This speech is attempting to convey the truth that the anglo-saxon mindset forces us to attempt to apply morals to what is essentially an immoral situation.
