"Do you think you could stop your "representatives" from enacting any law they want" Interest in re-election usually prevents this. Unless they seize all the power of the state. But even then, who is the government (Congress, etc.) against 300 million people? Only if people go "oh well" would there be a rise of oppression. And it happens too frequently, as we know.

Socialism is the theoretical stepping stone to communism. Every instance of communism, and almost every instance of socialism, has been partnered with dictatorships or oppressive government.
