This clip was taken from "Faith & Reason" on PBS. Excerpt was read at the PEN American Center on April 26, 2006. This is the infamous passage that sparked off the book's controversy. Quick Update: Since I've been confused for both Jewish, and Muslim somehow, for the record: I'm actually agnostic.

you do not see how the book is offensive? Former prime minister Magaret Thatcher was called "maggie the bitch" and she was the prime minister at the time the book was published Its calling British people "sister fuckers" its mocking black people saying "nigger eats white mans shit" And you dont see how that is offensive? and by the way farishsta means angel see how he tricks his readers

Farishta is the last name for one of the protagonists, Gibreel I think. Urban Dictionary tells me "haramzada" is something like bastard. Still, even w/o an exact definition it's obvious haramzada was a curse. He writes with Indian English, which has some words (especially curses) that we don't use. Complaining about that is like complaining about Shakespeare's middle english imo. I still don't see how the book is offensive to either nations. Having naughty characters is hardly a bad thing.

You might've noticed I posted this video two years ago. It's been twice as long since I've read the book. A quick glance at my ebook does show you're mostly correct, how refreshing. However it's him talk from a narrators viewpoint about another character. Maybe acknowledging such people exist in this world and crafting a story with them is offensive to you. I and many other people don't care.

Are you thick? No! his characters did not say those things it was him talking from a narrators viewpoint a person saying such things in a book is unacceptable whether it be him or his characters go say that to a british persons face they'll break your jaw in 2 pieces have you read the book? NO! i did'nt think so

Rushdie didn't say that, his characters did. He doesn't believe in those things anymore than George Lucas believes in the Force. Just because something is in a book doesn't mean that the writer is actually expressing his viewa. I mean duh?
